Tips for Home
Mechanics
If you
maintain your own family vehicles, here are some tips
for changing and recycling oil:
-
Place a
clean drip pan directly under the vehicle's oil pan plug
to collect as much of the used oil as possible and
prevent spills.
-
Loosen and
remove the old filter and drain off as much oil as
possible out of the filter into your drip pan.
-
Pour the
used oil into a clean, empty plastic container with a
tight lid.
-
Locate your
nearest used oil collection site and take your used oil
there for recycling.
Used oil facts:
-
Used oil
that has been poured into a storm or sewer drain, on the
ground, or put in the landfill can contaminate
underground streams and wells making them unsafe to use
as drinking water.
-
Used oil
from a single oil change can ruin a million gallons of
fresh water.
-
To produce
2.5 quarts of lubricating oil, it takes 42 gallons of
crude oil, but only one gallon of used oil.

Waste / Recycling Coordinator at (814) 849-1521 for more
